The honest bit
Every tree here is a compromise
There is no species that smells like a spruce and holds like a Nordmann. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a Nordmann and hoping you do not notice the lack of scent.
Needle retention and fragrance come from opposite things. The resin that makes a spruce smell is the resin it loses as it dries, and the waxy needle that makes a Nordmann last is the reason it smells of very little. Pick the one that matters more to you.
If you genuinely want both, buy a Nordmann and a £6 armful of spruce foliage for the mantelpiece. That is what most of the staff do.
